If your earlier studies taught you the basic rules of how drugs interact with the body, this department is where you apply those rules to the body’s most vital and complex systems: the brain and the heart. Here, B.Pharm students dive deep into the mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, and side effects of the world’s most crucial life-saving medications. We don’t just ask what a drug does; we explore the microscopic, receptor-level science of how it alters human physiology to treat severe diseases.
What Makes Our Department Stand Out
Advanced Behavioral Labs: To understand how drugs affect the brain, you need specialized equipment. Our labs feature advanced instruments like actophotometers, rotarod apparatus, and elevated plus-mazes, allowing students to study the effects of anti-anxiety and memory-enhancing drugs.
Ethical & Virtual Simulations: In strict compliance with CPCSEA guidelines for animal welfare, our department utilizes highly sophisticated computer simulation software (like ExPharm). This allows students to vividly observe the effects of drugs on cardiac and muscle tissues without the need for live animal testing.
From Receptor to Recovery: We bridge the gap between microscopic science and clinical reality. We train students to understand exactly why a specific blood pressure pill is chosen for a specific patient, connecting receptor-binding theories to real-world patient outcomes.
Focus on Drug Screening: Before a chemical becomes a medicine, it must be tested. We introduce students to the foundational pre-clinical screening models used by the pharmaceutical industry to evaluate new drug molecules for efficacy and safety.
What You Will Master Here
✔ Neuropharmacology (CNS): Unlocking the mysteries of the brain. You will comprehensively study the drugs used to treat complex neurological and psychiatric conditions, including epilepsy, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia, as well as general and local anesthetics.
✔ Cardiovascular Pharmacology (CVS): The science of saving the heart. You will explore how drugs manage hypertension (high blood pressure), prevent heart failure, treat arrhythmias, and dissolve blood clots, gaining a profound understanding of cardiovascular care.
✔ Endocrine Pharmacology: Mastering the body’s chemical messengers. You will study how hormonal drugs mimic or block the body’s natural endocrine system, focusing on critical treatments like insulin for diabetes, thyroid medications, and corticosteroids.
✔ Renal & Blood Pharmacology: Understanding how the body regulates fluids. You will learn about diuretics (water pills) used to treat edema and hypertension, as well as drugs that treat blood disorders like anemia.
✔ Bioassays & Tissue Experiments: The art of biological measurement. Through simulated experiments and isolated tissue preparations, you will learn how to determine the exact concentration and potency of a drug by observing its effect on living tissues.

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology – II!
